Rooftop tents (sometimes abbreviated as RTT) allow you to have a large flat sleeping area anywhere your vehicle will fit. They are significantly more expensive than most standard ground tents, offering some advantages. They are most commonly installed on SUVs but can be added to most trucks and some cars or other vehicles.
Advantages
- Always have a smooth, flat surface to sleep on (assuming your vehicle is relatively level).
- Great for off-road travel.
- Relatively fast setup and breakdown.
- Keeps you elevated above many potentially dangerous insects and animals.
- Roof top tents usually include an attached ladder.
Disadvantages
- Cost.
- Relatively heavy.
- Takes up most or all of your roof space.
- Need to climb up or down a ladder, which may be difficult for night toilet trips.
- Not very protected against theft.
- Roof-top tents may not be mountable on your vehicle's standard roof rack.
