Aluminum

Nomad Life Wiki

Aluminum is a handy material when building out your van since it's lightweight and doesn't rust. It won't work for every application.

Many step vans have aluminum boxes. If all-aluminum, it’s okay to power-wash everything before getting started on your build.

T-slot framing (also known by the brand name 80-20) is aluminum and can be used for cabinet and shelving construction.

Aluminum contact with other materials

Do Not Use oily cleaners, paint, or paint strippers on bare aluminum, since it may absorb and make it difficult to paint or glue things to the metal. Use a PH-neutral cleaner designed for use on aluminum. Acetone or alcohol on tough spots is okay.

Do Not Use silicone caulk on aluminum. It will cause corrosion and destroy the seal. Butyl rubber caulk should be okay but check labels.

Do Not Use steel or brass in contact with aluminum or it will cause corrosion; be sure to use stainless steel screws, rivets, etc., or learn tig welding. In certain applications, other materials like plastic or wood may also be suitable.
