Winter camping brings additional challenges when camping living nomadically in a vehicle.

Solar power in winter

If you have solar power in your vehicle, winter solar harvest will be considerably less than summer harvest due to reduced daylight hours and reduced sunlight angle. However, cool or cold solar panels do perform at higher efficiency than hot panels.

Keeping warm

Keeping warm while living in a vehicle is a bit easier than keeping cool! There are multiple options to stay warm, and they're relatively inexpensive. Your options can be part of your van build, simple additions like a portable heater, or simply moving to a warmer climate.Continue reading …

When living on the road, you'll have to deal with snow if you spend any time in cold regions. Many nomads choose to snowbird to avoid the cold and snow, but that's not an option for everyone. Sometimes snow can be a bit unexpected, so it's a good idea to be prepared for it just in case.

Finding parking

Finding overnight parking during the winter can be easier that during warmer weather. Campgrounds are generally empty or nearly empty. If stealth camping in the city, you can park for the night sooner due to earlier sunset. If heavy snow blankets your windows, it creates a temporary cocoon that no one can see into for additional privacy, and helps block noise transfer. However, snow plowing may mean that spots are limited or you'll have to move in the middle of the night.
