Roof hatches are a relatively uncommon exterior vehicle feature found in some vehicles used for nomadic living. They are most common in skoolies and other buses that have been installed at the factory or by the aftermarket for commercial use, but some nomads add them for access to the roof from inside the vehicle. A roof hatch serves as an emergency exit and can provide ventilation, especially when paired with an insect screen. Transparent or translucent hatches also serve as a skylight for additional light during the day.
