Reflectix®

Nomad Life Wiki
A window panel constructed from Reflectix and duct tape.

Reflectix® is a name brand reflective radiant barrier. It is designed to prevent radiant heat transfer and is often installed sub-optimally in vehicles. Reflectix requires an air gap between it and the vehicle exterior to be most effective. It can be used on vehicle walls or windows. If you can't create an air gap, it will still provide radiant heat reflection, but much less insulation capability.

“ All applications with an R-Value claim must have an enclosed air space (a cavity without free air flow) or face an open air space.[1]”

“ Product can be adhered with screws, staples, adhesive or contact cement. The benefit is enhanced if installed with an enclosed air space on the exterior facing side of the product.[2]”

Creating an air gap

To create an air gap on vehicle walls, you can use furring strips between the Reflectix and the outer wall[3]. Attach the furring strips to the wall, and attach the Reflectix to the strips.

To create an air gap for window coverings, you can use a layer of bubble wrap (the kind used for shipping packaging) between the Reflectix and the glass. Glue the two together and cut to the correct shape for your windows (bubble wrap goes on the glass side). Alternatively, add suction cups to your Reflectix panel (with super glue, or glued-on magnets, or similar). The suction cups will hold the panel onto the glass. If you attach the suction cups with magnets, the panel is easy to remove each morning. You may also be able to attach the panel to the window frames instead of directly to the glass.

Making panels

Making window-shaped panels can be a challenge since they are generally not very rectangular, but Reflectix can mostly be trimmed in place. See dealing with irregular shapes to learn some other strategies.

You may need to monitor your temps when using reflective window coverings:  “Reflectix on the inside of the windows made my glass so hot I was worried about the weather seals.[4]”

Other uses

Some nomads have reported positive results from covering their coolers or refrigerators with Reflectix to block radiant heat transfer, which should keep the interior colder for longer. You can seal the seams with metallic duct tape. On powered units, be sure not to cover any vents or heat sinks.

DIY reflective window covers

You can create a DIY product with similar properties by sandwiching layers of Mylar sheets and bubble wrap.

Usage note: Reflectix is sometimes spelled "reflectics" or "reflecticks", but these are incorrect spellings of the brand.
