In a vehicle, a bulkhead is a wall or partition that separates the front cab (driving area) from the cargo area, living area, or passenger seating area. The bulkhead may contain a door to allow passthrough access. Bulkheads are also known as "partitions", "cargo dividers", "dividing walls", and "cargo walls". Many nomads remove existing bulkheads.
Depending on their strength, bulkheads can provide significant protection during a crash; they can slow or stop objects from flying forward and striking the driver or other occupants of the cab. Bulkheads that are solid or have a closeable door also offer some privacy, security, and may be insulated.
The main disadvantage of bulkheads is that they reduce your overall living space and may prevent the vehicle driving area (cab) from being used as an extension of the living space. For example, with a bulkhead you cannot take advantage of swivel seats that can be used comfortably while parked. If you remove your bulkhead, you will likely find that it has no resale value and should be given away or (more likely) scrapped; there are many more people who want to remove an existing bulkhead than to add one.
Instead of a bulkhead wall, many nomads opt for a more temporary and flexible solution, a privacy curtain. This is placed behind the front seats and can be easily opened, closed, or removed.
If you are buying or selling a bulkhead, check local listings on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, etc., or inquire at local junk yards.
