Hitch racks offer additional storage on the outside of your vehicle. They attach to your tow hitch. Some are able to fold down to allow easier access to the rear doors of your vehicle.

You may wish to add reflective tape or stickers to your hitch rack; the rack sticks out beyond where people are expecting your vehicle to end and they are often painted black, so extra visibility is beneficial.
If you have a vehicle that bounces a lot in the rear (such as most skoolies) or you do a lot of off-road travel, hitch racks are much more likely to break over time. The more heavily loaded your rack, and the farther away from your rear axle, the greater the strain.
Be sure your load is well secured so nothing falls off, and locked to reduce theft risk. If possible, do not store valuable items outside your vehicle, such as generators.
