Ground clearance is the distance between the ground and the lowest point of the vehicle other than the tires. It's an approximate measure of the height of an object (such as a rock) that the vehicle can safely "clear", or go over without touching. It's an important feature to consider if you are planning to take your vehicle off-road. Vehicles with high ground clearance often have more undermount space if the ground clearance isn't as important to you.
Ground clearance for different vehicle types:
- High ground clearance: Most box trucks, buses, motorhomes, step vans
- Moderate ground clearance: Most trailers, vans, SUVs, pickup trucks
- Low ground clearance: Cars, minivans
