It can be challenging to come up with good gifts for van lifers since the nomadic lifestyle is so different from conventional living. When someone lives in a van (or RV, or car, or other vehicle), their space is significantly limited, which means that physical gifts may simply not fit anywhere even though they would otherwise be appreciated.
The rest of this page is focused on ideas for presents for someone you know personally, such as for a birthday or holiday. If you are interested in gifts for someone who is struggling to get by and living in their vehicle out of necessity, see How can I help someone who lives in their vehicle?
Physical gifts
Before getting someone a physical gift, it's a good idea to find out if that specific gift would be beneficial and useable in their vehicle. Nomads are often minimalist by nature, and those that aren't are still constrained by a small living space, so they must constantly prune their belongings for efficiency and utility. That said, a special personal gift can definitely be appreciated.
If you know of a specific need the recipient has, such as a portable power station or kitchen appliance, and are comfortable asking them exactly what that need is, go for it! Knowing that they need something and fulfilling that need is sure to be appreciated. Try to make sure that you are getting the specific item needed, since incorrect product dimensions or specifications can unfortunately be a "deal breaker" in a vehicle even when it wouldn't be a problem in a house or apartment.
If you aren't aware a specific need, focus on gifts that are physically small or lightweight. Flat items, such as a scratch-off wall map of locations visited, are especially easy to integrate into most vehicles. Items that are compact but higher value, such as jewelry or a phone, may also be appreciated.
Items that use electricity may not be useable for some nomads, since their on-board electrical system may not be sufficient. For example, a space heater is only useable when plugged into the power grid and cannot be powered by batteries or the vehicle's engine. Any item that uses electricity to generate heat (hair dryers, hot plates, coffee makers, etc.) may be unusable. If the recipient has a large vehicle, or typically parks at RV parks or other places with hookups, then electric items may be fine.
If the recipient lives in a small vehicle like a car and stays where the weather gets cold, items for keeping warm may be beneficial. For example, rechargeable warmers that can be placed in a sleeping bag at night.
Gift cards
Most nomads drive a lot, and since their vehicle is also their house, that driving is typically more expensive than it is for non-nomads. Fuel efficiency is lower in a larger vehicle, so gift cards for gas or diesel are always useful and appreciated. Similarly, gift cards for oil changes or vehicle repair and maintenance services will almost certainly be used.
Other gift card ideas:
- Groceries
- Restaurants
- Retail stores that sell consumable goods
Passes or digital subscriptions
Passes or subscriptions for these services may be appreciated:
- Annual pass for state or national parks
- Subscriptions for streaming services, especially those that allow downloads for offline use, such as Netflix
- Gift card for mobile phone service
- Gift membership for a service like Harvest Hosts or RV parks pass 1000 Trails
- Gift subscription to Amazon Prime since orders can be delivered to Amazon Lockers for those who don't have a fixed address.
- For some nomads, a gift membership to Costco or Sam's Club may be appreciated. While the recipient likely won't make many bulk purchases, the fuel savings may be worth more than the membership cost, especially for those with large vehicles.
