Elevation

Driving at high elevation in Canada.

In some regions, changing your elevation is a great option for keeping warm or keeping cool, depending on the season. All other things being equal, as you go up a mountain the temperature will decrease. As you go down a mountain, the temperature will increase. Elevation changes also affect cooking and heating appliances due to the change in oxygen content.

Temperature changes

On sunny days with low humidity:[1]

  • For every 100 meters in elevation change, expect about 1°C temperature change.
  • For every 1000 feet in elevation change, expect about 5.5°F temperature change.

During periods of rain, snow, high humidity, or cloud cover, expect less of a change:

  • For every 100 meters in elevation change, expect about 0.6°C temperature change.
  • For every 1000 feet in elevation change, expect about 3.3°F temperature change.

In mountainous areas, changing your elevation to get a better ambient temperature is almost always a lot faster and cheaper than driving somewhere at the same elevation.

In the western United States during the summer,  “7,000' is a good rule of thumb for summer boondocking.[2]”

Cooking and heating

Due to the change in air pressure and oxygen content, cooking and heating appliances can be affected by elevation. As you increase elevation, performance drops. At the highest elevations, there's an increased risk the appliance won't work at all. Due to an improper burn, there may be more dangerous chemicals present. A carbon monoxide detector is a good idea.

Most propane heaters, stoves and other appliances should work fine up to 9000 feet, and will begin to have problems at higher elevations. Many will continue to work until 15,000 feet or more.[3]

Fuel injection

Nomads who regularly change altitude significantly may benefit from fuel injected (FI) vehicles over carbureted ones; FI systems automatically compensate for varying oxygen levels.
