Conversion difficulty refers to the amount of work required to converting a vehicle from its original purpose to a residential vehicle. Straight walls are generally easier to work with when adding insulation, cabinetry, windows, etc. Once you've decided whether to go pre-built or self-built with your vehicle choice, assessing the conversion difficulty is an important next step in the vehicle features to consider.
Some people want or need to do a no-build conversion, where no furniture or equipment is permanently attached to the vehicle, allowing the conversion to be completely removed when the vehicle is sold or used for other purposes. Others want something somewhere between a minimal build and a luxury build.
Smaller vehicles can be more difficult to convert due to the increased need for efficient use of space, but this is offset somewhat by the reduced amount of furniture and equipment that will fit inside the vehicle's living space.
Conversion difficulty for different vehicle types:
- No conversion needed: Motorhomes, travel trailers, pickup truck campers
- Easiest conversion: Box trucks, step vans, cargo trailers
- Moderate conversion difficulty: Cargo vans, pickup trucks with toppers
- Difficult or extensive conversion: Buses, passenger vans, cars, minivans, SUVs
