About this tool
This lookup tool is not an official government source and should not be relied on as such. Rather, this tool can help you find relevant rules from the official sources. City codes change and may be incomplete here. Before deciding to sleep in your vehicle in a city, you should confirm with the official code, the city clerk, or the city attorney. You may also wish to call the local non-emergency police phone number. State law and other restrictions may also apply; for example: zoning regulations, HOA rules, official signage, private property signage, or rules from overlapping jurisdictions.
In some cases, a local jurisdiction may overrule the ordinances you see here; for example: a small city might disallow sleeping while parked, even though the larger metropolitan area allows it, or a city might allow it, but an overlapping township or county might disallow it. In city lists, "CDP" indicates a "Census Designated Place".
This tool compiles information from multiple sources, including non-official web sites and news articles which may not be relevant to the queried city. Sources may also contradict each other, especially if one source has newer information. Quality of search results varies by city. Cities with a population under 5,000 are not included; for smaller cities and jurisdictions, see our Parking regulations page for links to other resources.
Your use of this tool indicates your understanding and agreement that this is not legal advice and is provided for your information only. Nomad Life Wiki cannot provide guidance or interpretation of city codes. See our Disclaimers page for additional notices. This tool may be discontinued at any time.

Why is this needed?
If you are camping or living in your vehicle and want to sleep within city limits (but not at a campground), it's important to check the city parking regulations and look for signs at your destination. Knowing whether it is legal to sleep in a location helps you avoid "The Knock" in the middle of the night, a daily concern for those doing van life, urban camping, or parking a motorhome or trailer on the street. Knowing the overnight camping rules makes a big difference!
