A chuck box (or kitchen box or camp kitchen) is a large box for all your camp kitchen supplies and appliances that is portable for use at camp sites. The chuck box will typically open on one side like a cabinet, revealing multiple interior storage compartments which are sized for various items. Often, the door of the chuck box will open down instead of to the side to create a work surface.
Chuck boxes generally have handles on the sides for easier carrying, since they are usually carried when full of supplies and food. This type of camping kitchen's portability is its main benefit over a fixed kitchen in your vehicle.
Large chuck boxes may fill the entire tailgate area of a hatchback vehicle, allowing them to be used in place as a tailgate kitchen, or removed and set on a picnic table for easier access.
As with any items that contain food items and food smells, be sure not to leave a chuck box outside in areas where bears are present, unless it is made of steel and can be securely locked.
