Analysis paralysis

Nomad Life Wiki

Analysis paralysis is the unfortunate result of planning and researching so much that you get stuck and find yourself unable to make a plan and move forward with it. Planning can pay off, but it is easy for to get overwhelmed by details and perfectionism.

  • What kind of camper?
  • 2wd or 4wd?
  • How much solar and battery?
  • Which cargo van?
  • Will I like it?
  • Where will I park?
  • How will I earn money?
  • etc. etc.

Here are some ideas to help break the cycle of endless research:

First, start with what you have. A minivan? A pickup? An SUV? A car? Start with that. Do the camping/living you like in that vehicle you already own. This will get you practical experience with the vehicle (and your own preferences) as soon as possible.

Start with just the bare essentials. If the weather is nice, it doesn't take much:

  • Take out (or fold down) the back seats and put a cot back there. Or pad and sleeping bag. Maybe build a quick bed platform if you want.
  • Flashlight.
  • Car phone charger, or a small portable battery pack to recharge your phone.
  • Jugs of drinking water from the grocery store.
  • Some food that doesn't require refrigeration.
  • Toilet paper and a bucket lined with garbage bags for a toilet, or even a spade for a cathole toilet.
  • Maybe a book.

Then, just go! Your early test runs will be easiest to do near your home base. Maybe in your driveway. That way if there is a problem or forgotten item (toilet paper!), you can run back in and get it.
